About Tick-borne Encephalitis Vaccination
How Our Tick-borne Encephalitis Vaccine Service Works
Book an Appointment
Call or book online to schedule your travel health consultation with us. We recommend booking 6–8 weeks before departure for the standard TBE vaccination course. You can also avail same-day appointments for urgent travel.
Attend Your Consultation
Our pharmacists review your plans, give the first TBE dose, schedule follow-ups, and provide travel and tick-bite advice.
Complete Your Course
Attend all follow-ups to complete your vaccination. Protection starts about 2 weeks after the second dose. The third dose ensures long-term protection, and a booster is advised 3 years later if at risk.
What Is Tick-borne Encephalitis?
Tick-borne encephalitis is a viral infection transmitted through bites from infected ticks, primarily the Ixodes species found in forested areas. The virus attacks the central nervous system and can cause serious neurological complications. It includes inflammation of the brain (encephalitis) and spinal cord (myelitis).
How Encephalitis? Spreads:
- Bites from infected mosquitoes or ticks carrying encephalitis viruses
- Transmission through mosquito species active during evening or nighttime
- Exposure in rural, forested, or agricultural areas with standing water
- Contact with infected animals such as pigs, birds, or small mammals
- Consumption of unpasteurised dairy products in rare cases
High-Risk Destinations Include:
- Rural areas of Southeast Asia including Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos
- India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and other parts of South Asia
- China, Japan, and South Korea in agricultural regions
- Pacific Islands with high mosquito activity
- Scandinavia
Importance Of Tick-borne Encephalitis Vaccine Vaccination
The TBE vaccine provides over 95% protection after completing the full course. It’s one of the most effective travel vaccines available. With no specific antiviral treatment for TBE, prevention through vaccination is crucial.

Symptoms Of Tick-Borne Encephalitis
Around 70% of tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) infections cause no symptoms or only mild flu-like illness. However, approximately 20–30% progress to a severe neurological phase that can become life-threatening.
First phase (2–28 days after tick bite)
- Flu-like symptoms including fever, headache, and fatigue
- Muscle and joint pain
- General malaise and loss of appetite
- Symptoms usually last 2–7 days before a symptom-free period
- High fever returning after brief improvement
- Severe headache and neck stiffness
- Confusion, disorientation, or personality changes
- Sensitivity to light (photophobia)
- Tremors, seizures, or paralysis
- Dizziness and coordination problems
- Coma in the most severe cases
- Persistent headaches and fatigue lasting months or years
- Memory problems and difficulty concentrating
- Personality changes and mood disorders
- Permanent paralysis or movement disorders
- Speech difficulties

Serious side effects are extremely rare. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, severe swelling of face or throat, widespread rash, or signs of allergic reaction.
