Symptoms Of Meningococcal Disease
Meningitis B symptoms develop rapidly and require immediate emergency treatment. Early recognition and urgent medical care are essential to reduce the risk of severe complications.
Early symptoms (first 12–24 hours)
- High fever with cold hands and feet
- Severe headache that does not respond to pain relief
- Neck stiffness and pain when moving the head
- Sensitivity to bright lights (photophobia)
- Vomiting and nausea
- Drowsiness, confusion, or unusual behaviour
- Joint and muscle pain
- Rapid breathing and increased heart rate
- Non-blanching rash that does not fade under pressure
- Purple or red pin-prick spots spreading rapidly
- Mottled, pale, or bluish skin
- Extreme coldness in hands and feet
- Rapid deterioration in consciousness
- Seizures or fits
Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare (less than 1 in 10,000 people). Seek immediate medical attention if you experience difficulty breathing, facial swelling, or widespread rash within hours of vaccination.
Side Effects Of Meningitis B Vaccination
The MenB vaccine is safe and well-tolerated. Most side effects are mild and resolve within 24–48 hours. Fever within 6 hours of vaccination is very common — paracetamol is recommended to prevent and treat this.

- Fever which usually settles within 24 hours with paracetamol
