Vaccine Overview

What Is Meningococcal Disease?

Meningococcal disease is a serious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection caused by Neisseria meningitidis. The infection can rapidly lead to meningitis, which is inflammation of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, or septicaemia, a severe bloodstream infection. Symptoms may develop suddenly and can include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, vomiting, sensitivity to light, confusion, and a distinctive skin rash.

The disease can progress very quickly and may become fatal within 24 hours if not treated promptly. Even with treatment, some survivors may experience long-term complications such as hearing loss, brain damage, nerve damage, limb amputations, or learning difficulties. Meningococcal disease spreads through close personal contact, coughing, sneezing, and sharing saliva, making vaccination an important form of protection, especially for travellers and individuals in high-risk environments.

How Disease? Spreads:

  • Close or prolonged contact with an infected person
  • Respiratory droplets released through coughing or sneezing
  • Kissing or sharing drinks, utensils, cigarettes, or personal items
  • Living in crowded environments such as dormitories, military camps, or hostels
  • Large gatherings and religious pilgrimages with close personal interaction

High-Risk Destinations Include:

  • Sub-Saharan Africa — the 'Meningitis Belt' stretching from Senegal to Ethiopia
  • Saudi Arabia, particularly for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims where vaccination is mandatory
  • Parts of South America with periodic meningococcal outbreaks
  • Certain regions of Asia experiencing seasonal or localised outbreaks
Vaccine Importance

Importance Of Meningitis ACWY Vaccine Vaccination

Meningococcal disease strikes suddenly and progresses within hours. Even with immediate treatment, approximately 10% of cases are fatal. More than 20% survivors experience serious long-term complications.

Why Meningitis ACWY Vaccine matters:

Rapid progression

Symptoms can develop from mild to life-threatening in as little as 4–6 hours

Severe complications

One in five survivors suffers permanent disability including brain damage, hearing loss, limb amputation, or scarring

Protects vulnerable groups

University students in halls of residence face 4 times higher risk than the general population

Travel requirement

Saudi Arabia mandates ACWY vaccination for all Hajj and Umrah pilgrims

Community protection

Vaccination reduces transmission and protects those who cannot be vaccinated

Long-lasting immunity

Single dose provides initial protection: booster recommended every 5 years for continued risk, and for Hajj/Umrah vaccination must be at least 10 days before travel and no more than 3 years prior
