About Hepatitis A Vaccination
How Our Hepatitis A Vaccine Service Works
Book an Appointment
You can call us or use our online booking system to schedule your travel health consultation. We recommend booking 6–8 weeks before departure for optimal protection timing. However same-day appointments are available when needed.
Attend Your Consultation
Our pharmacist will review your travel plans and medical history to ensure the vaccine suits you. Your first Hepatitis A dose can be given at this appointment. We'll discuss timing for other vaccines, offer travel health advice, and schedule your second dose in 6–12 months to complete the course.
Receive Treatment
The Hepatitis A vaccine is administered intramuscularly in the deltoid (≥1 year) or anterolateral thigh (<1 year). The appointment takes approximately 15–20 minutes including post-vaccination observation. You'll receive written confirmation of your vaccination for your travel records.
What Is Hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a contagious viral infection that affects the liver and is primarily spread through contaminated food, water, or close contact with an infected person. The virus causes liver inflammation and commonly leads to symptoms such as fatigue, fever, nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, and jaundice, which causes yellowing of the skin and eyes.
Although most people recover completely without long-term liver damage, the infection can be more severe in older adults and individuals with existing liver conditions.
How A? Spreads:
- Consuming contaminated food or drinking water
- Eating raw or undercooked shellfish from polluted water sources
- Close personal contact with an infected person
- Poor hand hygiene after using the toilet or changing nappies
- Contaminated food prepared by infected individuals
High-Risk Destinations Include:
- Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh)
- Sub-Saharan Africa
- Central and South America
- Middle East
- Parts of Southeast Asia
Importance Of Hepatitis A Vaccine Vaccination
The Hepatitis A vaccine provides high levels of protection against infection. A two-dose primary course provides long-term protection, with the second dose given 6–12 months after the first. For those at ongoing risk, a reinforcing dose is recommended at 25 years after the primary course.
