- It can be accessed from when periods begin up to 54 years of age
- Eligibility and suitability are checked by the pharmacist during consultation
What is the Pharmacy Contraception Service?
- You can access contraception from your local pharmacy without needing to see a doctor or nurse first
- Participating pharmacies can supply progesterone-only pills, often called the mini pill, and combined pills containing progesterone and oestrogen
- The service is free of charge on the NHS where appropriate
- An initial supply may be for 3 months and, once stable, can be extended up to 12 months where suitable
Accessing the service
- You can visit the pharmacy directly or book an appointment
- No GP referral and no NHS 111 referral is required
- You will complete a short questionnaire and provide basic health information
- Your pharmacist will discuss options and help identify the most appropriate method
- For repeat supply, bring your empty pill packet so the same formulation can be checked and continued where suitable
